Achievements ... Some Achievements and Current Projects ... • Spalding By-Pass – Without our unrelenting demand for a by-pass, juggernaut traffic would have been destructively entrenched forever through the town. • Riverside – Riverside path suggested and laid-out with the help of boys from the Grammar School. Idea later taken up and developed by the Council. Dilapidated river quayside along High Street restored under supervision of architect member, assisted by youths on Government’s Youth Training Scheme. Heritage Trail prepared and shortly to be set up. • Architectural Awards – Scheme run at intervals over a number of years. The next due in 2004. • Tree Planting – The mature, settled-in look of the retirement apartments on London Road is the result of trees planted on the site by the Society several years ago. • Nature Conservation – Species intended for the new wild-life area alongside the power station substantially revised in favour of native flora after advice from the Society. • Street Clutter – Moves initiated by the Society to reduce sign and street-furniture clutter in the historic town centre, now taken up by the Council’s Market Towns Initiative and County Highways Department. Co-ordinated design for Hall Place is in preparation. • New (Taku) Footbridge – Bridge engineer persuaded to keep pedestrian barricading to the minimum. • Bowling Alley – District Council held to its own policies on the siting of leisure development.
