MARK-IT Trail: Cattle taking shape

The photos of the emerging heifer as the bull-to-be waits inscrutably for attention. Life-size, both sculptures are being modelled on individual animals from a herd of Lincoln Reds bred by Scott Thompson, who farms near Melton Mowbray.

The young heifer is ‘La  Fontaine Mary’, and her statue will weigh in at about 5.5 tonnes.

The bull is 11-year-old ‘Walmer Talent’ – 6.1 tonnes of red sandstone. Graeme Mitcheson, the sculptor, describes him as “an enormous, very handsome and muscular beast with an extremely striking physique. I will be looking to capture this look with the sculpture.”
